Sweet as Circus Peanuts — the Spring 2015 Program-wide Anthology Is Here!

Sweet as Circus Peanuts | Student Anthology Series Vol. 5 | Spring 2015

This year the residencies of Your Words Matter expanded to include COSSA Academy in Wilder, Idaho, putting us in 8 classrooms reaching over 100 students and redoubling the size of the program. The students were willing to share diverse experiences with their teachers, our writer in residence and their fellow students. This often required a leap of faith on their part.

As brave students and teachers share their writing with their classmates and students, that courage grows and spreads. Their example creates an environment of emotional safety. These students and teachers are some of the bravest people we know. We want to thank each of them for being part of Your Words Matter, and we can’t wait to see what they do next!

Special thanks to Carleen Schnitker, Principal at Parkview and Ridgeline, Pat Berg, Vice Principal at Ridgeline, Melisa LaPrath, the instructional coach for Nampa Alternative Schools, Brandy Fitzwater, Nathan Andrus and Elizabeth Mann, the teachers who welcomed the program into their classrooms at Ridgeline.

Thank you to Dr. Harold Nevill for welcoming the Your Words Matter program into COSSA Academy, and to Malia Tate and Juan Garcia as well as numerous aids who worked with students to encourage their writing, sharing, and personal growth.

As always, our deepest gratitude to Michelle Tanberg (aka Auntie iPod), the dedicated English teacher at Parkview who keeps the program alive with her unwavering support, homemade pies, and fun packed trips to the Zoo.

We also hugely appreciate The Peery Foundation for their continued monetary, moral and organizational support.

We would like to thank, as well, these funders and supporters of the program without which this anthology would not be possible:
Maureen Jastremsky, Robert McCarl, Eric D. Dixon, Lori McDonald, Maury Guay, Charlotte Iverson, Christopher Farnsworth, Jason Coughlin, Clare Ward-Jenkins, Amanda Linzy, Victor & Jonett Berg, Lillie Peery, Tarali Messner, Sean & Spring McDonald, Clara and Lee Leafgren, Brad Tanberg, SaraAnne and Sheldon Stout, Christine Moore, Keri Pascoe, Jeremy Jensen and other anonymous donors.

The 2013-2014 Your Words Matter Anthology is here!

While the Frogs Are Having Good Laughs and Conversations| A Program-Wide Anthology from Your Words Matter | Spring 2014

This year Your Words Matter expanded and doubled its residencies. We were lucky enough to work with two great schools who welcomed us into their classrooms. The pieces collected into this anthology are the culmination of the teaching efforts of creative nonfiction writer Amelia Berg, who conducted 12 week residencies with four different classrooms of young writers at Parkview Alternative and Ridgeline Alternative High Schools in Nampa, Idaho, throughout the 2013-2014 school year.

In this compilation, these young writers attempt to comprehend and communicate moments in their lives that have changed them into the maturing young adults they are. They test the boundaries of life, imagined and real, with boundless imagery and figurative imagination.

We’d like to thank the staff and teachers at Parkview and Ridgeline Alternative High Schools who made this anthology possible.

We owe our deepest gratitude to Michelle Tanberg (aka Auntie iPod), the dedicated English teacher at Parkview who keeps the program alive with her unwavering support and homemade pies.

We would also like to thank these funders and supporters of the program and the anthology: The Peery Foundation for their continued monetary, moral and organizational support; and the GFWC Boise Columbian Club and Nampa Women’s Century Club for sponsoring and hosting readings and annual poetry and short story awards.

Fundraising has begun for the 2014 Program-Wide Anthology

The Anthology
This year Your Words Matter has held two 12-week residencies, working with students from Parkview and Ridgeline Alternative High Schools in Nampa, Idaho. The residencies at each school are wrapping up, and this dedicated and talented group of young writers will, with the help of your tax-deductible donation, be published in the end-of-the-year anthology.
We believe that each student’s writing efforts deserve to be recognized by inclusion in a professionally published book. All of our residencies include publication as an integral part of the writing experience. Each student is responsible for revising and polishing at least one poem or story for the program-wide anthology. The anthology helps each student in each residency realize he or she is part of a larger ongoing program of writing and reading.
Teachers and students have been working hard to complete their pieces to submit for the fourth annual publication of the anthology. Much of the time spent editing, proofing and formatting the final galley proof will happen over the next month as we prepare the finished revision for publication.
The anthology will be published in May, and each residency student, teacher and school library will receive the perfect bound book.
The Campaign
We’re asking you to help fund the publication of the anthology with your tax-deductible donations. The printing and shipping costs alone are $500.
Your donation will support the publication of student work and the continuation of the program’s writing residencies and workshops that develop and support students’ imaginative writing of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Through weekly or daily instruction, we encourage students to challenge themselves to live deliberately and to create and write their stories in words that matter.

My Short Forever, our 2nd annual anthology, in print and available now!

My Short Forever|Your Words Matter Writing Residencies|2011The 2nd program-wide anthology from Your Words Matter’s Writing Residencies has arrived. In My Short Forever, young writers from our Writing Residencies program find their voices and make sure the world hears them. Through the encouragement of teachers and our writers-in-residence, they entered writing contests, gave public readings and finally allowed us to publish their heartfelt emotions and personal experiences–their loves and losses, the new lives created and the secret thoughts of their hearts all given as a gift to the world. Their words show the power they possess to change their lives and the lives around them.
